More Adult than the Adults

Today’s poem on The Writer’s Almanac didn’t speak to me.  It was entitled “What I Understood” by Katha Pollitt and I think I need to put it aside and try re-reading it later.  Often a poem that I can’t connect to strikes me differently if I read it at a different time of day or year.

There was one part that I did like, however: “…for children / are snobbish and cruel…”  For some reason it starts this big cyclone of circular thinking in my head.  Victoria, B.C. prides itself on being “more British than the British”.  I’ve heard this said of New Zealand as well.  Well, children can be “more adult than adults” don’t you think?  The snobbery and cruelty in adults seems amplified in children, just as their love, trust and friendship are amplified.

It is still very warm here – I think it topped out at 88 degrees and with nights getting into the low 40’s there is quite a temperature swing.  Last night the house was still stuffy and I opened the window.  The wind had come up and the cold breeze on my face while my body was snug under a blanket was delicious.  Eventually the wind made the blinds rattle and I didn’t want it to wake my husband who is still recovering from the flu.  I shut the window, but the house had cooled enough to sleep.

I started my readings for my first week of philosophy which is concerned with the arguments for and against the existence of God.  Both the arguments and the logic behind them are fascinating and once I was tickled to think of a counter-argument before it was addressed in the text.

Some of my other daily goals have been accomplished: something for the house, tomorrow’s to-do list and I only need to complete an item for The Artist’s Way for The Ode Less Travelled.  Another successful day!
