However, they are the only game in town when it comes to high-speed internet.  Or at least the only game in town at my budget.

For two days I’ve had sporadic internet access, with almost no access to any Google website.  I never realized how much Google meant to me until I couldn’t talk to him access it.  Today, for a brief, shining moment I thought I could connect.  I accessed my email, my calendar and was settling down for a long perusal of my feeds.  100+ posts in, I got the dreaded pop-up:

And now I can’t connect to Reader any more.  My Gmail is still accessible, although I was smart there and have my Gmail backed up with a PortableApps Thunderbird install.  I could whip right in and get my emails, even set up folders which are mirrored on my Gmail account.  Very cool.

I called Charter last night and, although they claimed nothing was wrong, Google worked for about 15 minutes.  I called in and reset my account just now and - guess what - Google is working again.  I’m betting it won’t be for long, though…

Geeking out a bit.  I just delivered my first PHP app with classes generated by POG and using PEAR’s Auth module.  Pretty code and quick implementation time (even if I did have to install PEAR for the client) - what more could one ask for?!

You Score as a Transhumanist-Biotech
Transhumanist

Transhumanists believe that humanity can and should strive to attain higher levels of physical, mental, and social achievement through the use of technology. They seek to extend human capabilities and improve the human condition through technology- supporting the quest for immortality, the conquering of death and disease, the amplification of human intelligence, and the capabilities of the human body.

Transhumanists recognize that over time and with technological advancements, man will realize new possibilities for society and human nature and achieve a posthuman condition (becoming more than human). Societal change is an important consequence of technological progress.

Because of this passionate trust in technological advancement, transhumanists generally see all technologies, as long as they don’t jeopardize the non-corporeal consciousness of a person, as being beneficial both to society and to the happiness and advancement of the person. Transhumanists see benefit not only in technologies that address medical necessities, but also aesthetic or recreational demands. They support advances in cybernetics, genetic engineering in clinical settings, embryo design, and other technologies that allow individuals to take control of their biology, and the human species to take control of evolution.

Transhumanists can be either hard-technology oriented–more inclined to add microchips and machines to their lifestyle–or bio-technology oriented–preferring the softer, more natural advancements and modifications that are made available.

For some reason I can’t connect to Google Reader or GCal.  I don’t care so much about GCal - I already know I’m going to go be tortured at 8:00 by a woman who calls herself a “personal trainer”.  Reader is the real problem.

I have a morning routine.  Get coffee.  Read the Yakima Horrible-Repulsive, check my email, read my feeds, start work.

Without Reader I feel vaguely panicked…disconnected from the world.  How can I survive without knowing what Jeremiah is up to?  What bon mots are Overheard in New York presenting?  Who is that one guy making fun of today?

I compensate.  Checked Twitter feed and then realized I should check FriendFeed where, joy of joys, I actually have comments!  Nosed around FriendFeed for a bit, but it is no compensation for my beloved feeds…

I’ve been thinking about my social web appearances this week since I started a FriendFeed.  Creating a new account made me think about all the social applications I belong to and how little I participate in most of them.  Here’s my run down:

Facebook:  OK, I use this a lot.  I like it because it is mostly a closed community and I can choose who reads my stuff - especially with the current changes.

Twitter:  Some days a lot, others not so much.  I’m trying to focus more on cool links than funny things my dogs are currently doing.

Google Reader:  I tend to star stuff for my personal review rather than share it.  If I do share, I tend more to post on either my Tumblr blog or Facebook.

Del.icio.us:  I’m terrible about bookmarking.  I just never do it.  If I find information or a site I really like I will email it to my gmail database, but rarely do I go reference it again.  How do you guys use it?

Flickr:  I plan on using more…I just haven’t been taking many photos recently!  I need a camera phone!

LinkedIn:   The only time I log in is when someone adds me to their network.

Amazon WishList and Netflix:  Sharing these is pure hubris.  Besides, I’m wondering if I really want people to see my taste in really bad movies?

Pandora:  I love Pandora.  Combined with Fred’s suggestions I’ve found tons of music that I love. Not so sure I want people to know that I can go from George Jones to the Raconteurs in an instant though.  I also love Bluegrass….and I’m not ashamed to admit it!

Other networks I belong to and rarely do much with:  Plaxo, Magnolia, …. I know there are others because I’m always getting email updates that I delete…

Compared to other people (Rubel, Scoble, I’m looking at you), I’m pretty moderate, but I feel overextended.  How are you integrating social networks into your daily life?

You know, I’d forgotten I had this blog.  In fact, I was stunned to realize I actually have the domain name!  I’m moving my single post from my newest tumblr blog here and continuing this one instead.
